A few months back I showed you a painting called Sparrow Rose Two.
I mentioned that a painting was done a few years before that which I had titled “Sparrow Rose.” I’d planned on posting a picture of it, but I simply couldn’t find one. The actual painting is no longer in my possession so I figured it was a bust.
Then…
I found a picture. It is a horrible low resolution picture to be sure, but it is a picture nonetheless. Sadly it doesn’t show a lot of the detail and vivid colors properly, but beggars can’t be choosers they say.
This is it.
I rarely paint on odd shaped canvases and the fact that I chose a decorative oval canvas for this I think says something about my intentions with this particular painting.
Yes… It was designed to appeal to the decorative consumer.
Even with that as a partial intention I didn’t shy from playing with the paint and letting the painting take it’s own form.
I believe it is fine to create things with the primary intention of sales sometimes, but I am also believe in risk.
Basically… I have a plot to follow, but I allow myself to stray from it in the hopes of hidden artistic achievement over that of craft. If it fails i simply paint over it and consider it a small loss of time and materials that was worth it for the sake of art.
This one wasn’t a fail. It worked as a likable piece and as an artistic one.
I loved it and so did everyone who saw it. I had a dozen offers before I even put a varnish on it and at least two dozen more before I decided it was time to part with it.
It however seemed to say “keep me a while,” so I didn’t part with it for a long time.
Eventually though the right person wanted it and I let it journey away from me.
So, that is the story on this one. If you like it please be sure and check out the earlier post on Sparrow Rose Two and see what you think.
I plan on revisiting this theme very soon. I may even do an oil or watercolor version.
Though the picture i had of the original painting was horrible and tiny it did show the basic central image well enough for me to attack it with some digital brushes to tighten it up and then filters to get a new look.
I uploaded the results to my Society6 account.
This is the result.
